Nutrient Water Samples from South Fork Salmon River (2011-2012)

We collected water samples monthly from June to August 2011 and during late May and early September 2012 for analysis of nutrients and dissolved organic carbon. Water was removed from the thalweg of the stream with a syringe that was triple rinsed with stream water. We filtered stream water (30 mL) through a membrane filter (0.45 µm Millipore IRL Ltd, Tullagreen Ireland) into acid-washed bottles with no headspace. Water samples were kept frozen until analysis. Water samples were analyzed for concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved nitrogen with a Shimadzu Water Analyzer (Shimadzu Company, Japan) to the nearest 0.001 mg/L. Concentrations of orthophosphate and NO3 + NO2 were analyzed with a SmartChem Water Analyzer (Mandel Scientific Company, Canada). The detection limit was 0.01 mg/L for both orthophosphate and NO3 + NO2. When values were below the detection limit, they were assigned a value of half the detection limit. No values of dissolved organic carbon or total dissolved nitrogen were below the detection limit.
